I was riding along Route
58 in Riverhead, New York when I saw an interesting wet land area.
I parked the car and hiked down into a small glen that opened up
into a pond. As I walked along the edge of the pond I noticed a small
stream leading to a clearing in the woods. A stump was sticking out
of the ground and caught me by surprise. It reminded me of Dante's
frozen circles of Hell with the heads of sinners submersed at different
levels in the ice. For me this was Hell in Autumn.
